IRS Transcripts Are Free, a Full Return Copy Needs Form 4506
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says it offers various transcript types free of charge, and online is the fastest and easiest way to get one; to get a complete copy of a previously filed tax return with all attachments (including Form W-2), submit Form 4506, and refer to the form for instructions and the processing fee. The IRS also says a transcript isn't a photocopy of your return.
The IRS says all transcript types are also available by mail with Form 4506-T, and tax return and account transcripts are available by calling 800-908-9946 and following the prompts. This article follows the IRS pages on copies and transcripts of tax returns and on transcript types: what each transcript is, how to order, how to get a full copy, and what to do after a disaster or if someone filed a fraudulent return in your name. It follows only the IRS pages and does not give tax advice.
How to order a transcript
The IRS explains (IRS, Transcript Types and Ways to Order Them):
- Online account: Register for an Individual Online Account to view, print or download all transcript types.
- By mail or phone: If you can't or prefer not to use an online account, order a tax return transcript or tax account transcript through Get transcript by mail or the automated phone service at 800-908-9946; allow 5 to 10 calendar days for delivery.
- Form 4506-T: Any transcript type can be requested with Form 4506-T; Form 4506-T-EZ can be used to request just a tax return transcript.
Transcript types (all free)
- Tax return transcript: Shows most line items from your original Form 1040-series return as filed, with forms and schedules, but not changes made after filing; available for the current and three prior tax years; the IRS says it usually meets the needs of lending institutions offering mortgages.
- Tax account transcript: Shows basic data such as filing status, taxable income and payment types, including changes made after filing; generally available for the current and nine prior tax years through the online account, and the current and three prior years by mail or phone; older years through Form 4506-T; availability may be limited under certain conditions.
- Record of account transcript: Combines the tax return and tax account transcripts into one; available for the current and three prior tax years.
- Wage and income transcript: Shows data from information returns the IRS receives, such as Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 and 5498; current-year information is generally available in the first week of February; it only shows documents filed with the IRS, which may not be everything issued to you; it is limited to about 85 documents, and if you have more, the online account can't generate it and you need Form 4506-T; available for the current and nine prior tax years.
- Verification of non-filing letter: States that the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040-series return as of the request date; it doesn't say whether you were required to file; available after June 15 for the current tax year or anytime for the prior three years, with older years through Form 4506-T.
A full copy of your return
- Form 4506: To get a complete copy of a previously filed return with all attachments (including W-2), submit Form 4506; refer to the form for processing time and fee.
- After a disaster: For taxpayers affected by a federally declared disaster who need copies to apply for disaster-related benefits or to file amended returns claiming disaster losses, the IRS waives the usual fees and expedites requests; you can call the IRS Disaster Assistance Hotline at 866-562-5227.
- Fraudulent return in your name: If someone else used your name and Social Security number to file a return without your permission, use Form 4506-F to request a copy of that fraudulent return.

- Business transcripts: The IRS has a separate page; this article did not check it.
- Which transcript you need to submit: Ask whoever is requesting the document; this article does not decide that.
