Alongside the paperwork of moving and filing taxes, establishing your digital identity is one of the first things to sort out. Downloading US apps, opening bank accounts, using government and private services: all of it assumes a US Apple ID, a Gmail account, and somewhere in the cloud to back things up.
Here are the three to set up:
📌 1. Create a US Apple ID
What it's for: downloading US apps (banking, transit, rentals, healthcare) and connecting iCloud for backup.
How to sign up
iPhone/iPad：
Open the App Store and tap "Forgot password or don't have an Apple Account?"
Choose "Create Free Apple Account"
Enter your date of birth, name, and email, and set a password
Verify the email, set your country/region to the United States, then add a payment method and phone number
On a Mac or computer: you can create the account on Apple's website , the process is the same.
👉 Turn on two-factor authentication. This account will hold a lot of your life.
📌 2. Create a Gmail account
What it's for: your main contact address for banks, government agencies, rental platforms, and official notices, and your login for Android and Google Drive.
How to sign up
Go to the Google account creation page
Click "Create account" and pick the type (personal, child, or work)
Enter your name, date of birth, username, and password
Verify your phone number and recovery email to finish
👉 Gmail includes 15GB of free cloud storage shared with Google Drive, which is plenty for important documents and photos.
📌 3. Back up with iCloud or Google Drive
Why back up
So you don't lose documents: passport, ID, lease, school and work paperwork
So a new phone or computer is a quick restore rather than starting over
So you can reach and share things from anywhere
Using iCloud
On iPhone: Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > turn on iCloud Backup
On iCloud.com: download and manage your files directly
Using Google Drive
Sign in to Google Drive with your Gmail account for the free 15GB
Sync through the mobile app or the desktop client
👉 Keep passport scans, proof of address, and immigration documents in the cloud, with encryption or restricted permissions.

With an Apple ID, a Gmail account, and cloud backup in place, you can download the apps you need, and beyond that you can:
Connect to banking and government services
