For a family that's recently arrived, how you communicate with teachers affects not just how your child learns but how confident and settled they feel at school. The National Education Association (NEA) has published guidance on working with English-learner families; here it is as ten strategies.

Immigrant families often change phone numbers as housing or finances shift. Tell the school each time, or you'll miss things that matter.

If they can't reach you by phone, schools may pass messages through an interpreter, a teacher, or a community organization. Offer them a backup contact yourself.

Ask the school for:
