Hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, earthquakes: natural disasters are a real part of life in the US. When one hits,knowing where the nearest emergency shelter is can determine whether you and your family are safe. Learning FEMA's official tools now means you can find shelter fast when it counts.
📌 Finding shelters with the FEMA app
FEMA App is the official app from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, with disaster information and live shelter locations.
Open the app and go to the 「Recover」 section to see which shelters are currently open.
The map shows nearby shelters and will give you directions.
You can also turn on alerts to get warnings for your area.

No internet? You can still search by SMS:
Text "SHELTER" followed by your ZIP code to 43362
Text "SHELTER 90210", for example, and you'll get back the nearest open shelter.
To find a Disaster Recovery Center
Text "DRC" followed by your ZIP code to 43362
Note: standard message rates may apply, and the information depends on what the agencies have updated.

📌 What to do ahead of time
Save pins in Google Maps: schools, gyms, and community centers are the usual shelter sites. Save them now.
Agree on a meeting point: decide with your family where you'll regroup, so you don't lose each other.
Know the route: drive or walk it once. Roads get closed and power goes out, and that's a bad time to be figuring out where you're going.
