It doesn't take long after moving here to discover a particular nuisance: the sheer volume of scam calls.
They impersonate banks, government agencies, insurance companies, and they're especially disorienting when you're new. Fortunately there are plenty of call-screening apps that will intercept most of them.

Millions of scam and spam calls are placed in the US every day.
New arrivals are targeted precisely because the language and the systems are unfamiliar.
Fall for one and you can lose personal data, or money.
The fix is straightforward: install a call-screening app like Hiya or Truecaller.
📌 What Hiya does
According to the Google Play listing:
Identifies and blocks scam calls in real time: you see "Spam" or "Scam Likely" before you answer.
Community database: users report suspicious numbers, so the block list updates quickly.
Visual voicemail: transcribes messages to text and filters out the suspicious ones.

📌 Other apps worth knowing
Besides Hiya, Truecaller are popular too. They work by combining:
A global number database with AI models
Analysis of billions of calls a month
Detection of robocalls and spoofed numbers
Custom block lists: filter by area code, block hidden numbers
which gives you a lot of control over what gets through.
📌 Installing and setting it up
1️⃣ Go to the App Store or Google Play and search for Hiya.
2️⃣ After installing, grant access to calls and contacts(it can't screen calls otherwise).
3️⃣ Some features need a paid subscription. Try the free version first.
4️⃣ Once enabled, it detects and filters suspicious calls on its own.
⚠️ One caution: read the privacy policy, and don't grant permissions the app doesn't actually need.

Most carriers already include spam filtering.
Suspicious calls may go straight to voicemail or show up labeled "Scam Likely".
The recommendation is to combine a third-party app or your phone's built-in filtering for better coverage.
