新移民早準備:開立 IRA 或 401(k) 退休帳戶,享稅優與資產增值
Once life and work are settled, retirement planning shouldn't be far behind. The US system works quite differently from most of Asia's. It rests largely on your own saving and investing.
If you're new here, Opening an IRA or 401(k) early gets you tax advantages, and lets time and compounding do most of the work.
📌 The IRA (Individual Retirement Account)
The most common individual retirement vehicle. You can open one whether or not your employer offers a plan.
Key 2025 rules
Standard contribution limit:$7,000。
Catch-up contribution at 50+: an extra $1,000, for $8,000 total.
Two types:
Traditional IRA: contributions may be deductible, depending on your income and whether you have an employer plan. Withdrawals in retirement are taxed.
Roth IRA: contributions aren't deductible, but withdrawals in retirement are tax-free.
No age limit: since 2020, anyone with earned income can contribute at any age.
Excess contribution penalty: going over the limit costs you 6%.
👉 An IRA suits you if you want control over how the money is invested. Open one through a bank, a brokerage, or an investment platform.
📌 Employer plans: 401(k), 403(b), 457
If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar, don't leave it on the table. It's how most American employees save for retirement.
Key 2025 rules
Elective deferral limit:$23,500。
Catch-up contribution at 50+: an additional $7,500.
Ages 60, 63: SECURE 2.0 raises the catch-up further.
Employer match: many companies match your contributions (you put in 5%, they put in 5%). That is, straightforwardly, free money.
👉 A 401(k) suits anyone in steady employment. It comes straight out of your paycheck, which enforces the discipline, and the match accelerates everything.
📌 Which should you choose
Lower income, just starting out → consider a Roth IRA. Tax-free withdrawals later are worth more when your current rate is low.
Your employer matches → contribute at least enough to capture the full match before anything else.
You want investment flexibility → an IRA gives you stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds to choose from.
📌 What these accounts give you
1️⃣ Tax advantages: a deduction now (traditional IRA, 401(k)) or tax-free withdrawals later (Roth IRA).
2️⃣ Compounding: the earlier you start, the more time does for you.
3️⃣ Enforced saving: automatic deductions mean the money is saved before you can spend it.
📌 In short: start early
A retirement account isn't only about the future; it's also the best tax and wealth-building tool available to you now.
If there's an employer match, fund the 401(k) to the match first.
For more investment flexibility, add an IRA.
Before choosing between traditional and Roth, talk to a financial advisor. The right answer depends on your income and tax situation.
👉 The short version: The earlier you start, the less your future is something to worry about.
Hi, I'm C from Taiwan, and I'm currently running a business in Los Angeles, USA. When I first arrived, it really wasn't easy. Whether it was the language or cultural differences, I spent a lot of time figuring out every little detail. But all those mistakes I made along the way helped me master the rhythm of adapting to life here quickly. I've gathered all my experience over the past few years on this website, hoping to help fellow Chinese speakers settle into American life sooner. Here, I share how to move over, find a job, and handle various daily tasks, saving you plenty of time and helping you avoid unnecessary detours. I hope my experience helps you start your new life in the US smoothly!
Running this site takes real work, and I'm grateful to everyone who supports it. If any of this has helped you, a small contribution keeps the updates coming.
