什麼是ITIN?如何申請與使用由美國國稅局(IRS)所發 ITIN(個人納稅人識別號碼)

What is an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)?

An ITIN is issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to people who aren't eligible for a Social Security number (SSN), typically foreign nationals, or individuals who can't provide qualifying identity documentation. It's a nine-digit number and, like an SSN, it's used for filing taxes and other tax purposes.

What an ITIN is for

  1. Filing taxes
This is its primary purpose. If you work in the US and can't get an SSN, you file using an ITIN.
  2. Opening a bank account
In some cases banks will accept an ITIN to open an account, particularly for non-citizens without an SSN.
  3. Building credit
Some lenders or credit card companies may also allow you to use an ITIN to build a credit history, helping you establish credit in the US.

Who can apply

How to apply

  1. Complete Form W-7
Start with the IRS's Form W-7, downloadable from the IRS website (IRS Form W-7 download)。
  2. Provide identity documentation
You'll need valid identity documentation, such as a passport. The IRS requires the original or a certified copy.
  3. Submit the application
Mail the completed W-7, your identity documents, and any other required materials to the designated IRS address. You can also file through an IRS-authorized Acceptance Agent.
  4. Wait for processing
Usually, the processing time for an ITIN application is 6 to 8 weeks, and your ITIN will be sent to you by mail.

ITIN vs SSN

Common misconceptions

  1. An ITIN is not work authorization
Having one doesn't let you work in the US. You still need proper work authorization. The ITIN is purely a tax identifier.
  2. An ITIN is not immigration status
It says nothing about your legal status. It's an identification number for tax filing, nothing more.

Why it matters

In short

ITIN is an alternative for foreigners who cannot get an SSN or those without legal status yet. With it, you can file taxes in the US, open a bank account, or build part of your credit history. If you are eligible, it is best to apply early, as it makes handling taxes and finances much easier later on.
