The public library is the most underrated resource in America, and almost nobody tells new arrivals about it.
It's not just books. There are language classes, films, free internet, and in many cities free museum passes. The first step to any of it is getting a library card。

Borrow books, ebooks, and DVDs for free
Use the library's computers and Wi-Fi
Learning resources: language courses, streaming video, professional databases
Community programs: free talks, immigrant services, story time for kids
Culture: in some cities the library hands out free museum admission
For newcomers, this card lets you borrow books and is a great helper to get you familiar with your local community quickly.
📌 How to apply
1️⃣ Check you're eligible, then apply online
Most cities require you to live in or pay taxes to the area.
Take the Austin Public Library as an example: fill in the form on their website first, then finish up at any branch.
2️⃣ Bring ID and proof of address
You'll need photo ID: a driver's license, passport, foreign national ID card, or green card all work.
You'll also need recent proof of address: an electricity or water bill, or your lease.
Documents must be originals or official copies.
3️⃣ Digital cards (eCard)
Many libraries issue an eCard so you can use the online resources without setting foot inside.
You upload your ID and proof of address, and it's usually active within two or three business days.
