A lot of new arrivals start out with no plan and end up either paying way too much rent or dealing with a bad landlord. Here's how to go about it.

Where you live shapes your quality of life and your sense of security. If you've just arrived, you have no credit history and no US rental record, which means landlords often ask for a larger deposit, or make things difficult in other ways.

Good if money is tight or you've only just arrived
Careful: scams are common here, so always see the place in person and meet face to face

A proper rental platform: listings come with real detail
Good for finding a long-term apartment or house
Filter by location, price, pet policy, and more
Downside: usually wants a credit history, so new arrivals may be asked for a bigger deposit

Read the lease properly: early-termination fees, and the rules for getting your deposit back
Are utilities and internet included?
How safe is the area: check neighborhood reviews on Google Maps and look up local crime rates
