Alongside the bank account and the phone number, there's something newcomers routinely miss: creating your state government online accounts。
These handle your license, your car, benefits, and health coverage. Needing one and not having it set up costs you a great deal of time.
The two you'll hit first:
A California DMV account → licenses, vehicle registration, payments, replacement documents
A MyBenefits account (your state's benefits portal) → health coverage, food assistance (EBT), unemployment benefits
📌 Why you want these
1️⃣ Everything's faster online
DMV lines routinely run to hours, but much of what you need can be done online.
Renewing registration, booking a test, replacing a license: all online.
2️⃣ Benefits require them
Each state runs its own MyBenefits platform for low-income health coverage (Medi-Cal in California), unemployment, and SNAP/EBT food assistance.
Without an account you can't submit an application or check its status.
3️⃣ You won't miss notices
The account delivers official notices: an expiring license, registration due for renewal, a benefits eligibility decision.

✅ Personal information
Name, date of birth, address
Social Security number (SSN) or ITIN, if you have one
✅ Contact details
A US mobile number, for verification codes
An email address, for registration and notices
✅ Documents
Your license number, if you have one
Foreign passport, green card, or visa details, depending on the state's system

Take the CA DMV as an example:
Go to dmv.ca.gov
Click "Create an Account"
Enter your personal and contact information
Set a password, 8, 12 characters with upper and lower case plus numbers
Verify your email and phone number
Once that's done you can check your license status, book appointments, pay fees, and even transfer vehicle ownership.

⚠️ Registering with a foreign phone number
Most systems only accept US mobile numbers. Get a US line first.
⚠️ Using a throwaway email
People use a temporary address, then can't reset a password or receive notices. Use something stable like Gmail or Yahoo.
⚠️ Mismatched information
Date of birth, spelling of your name, and address must match your official documents exactly, or the application gets rejected.
