Using it properly cuts your commuting costs substantially and makes getting around far easier.

These passes are run jointly by the university's transportation office and the city transit system, and typically give you:
Unlimited rides on buses, subway, light rail, or campus shuttles
Fares well below the public rate, sometimes free
A digital pass or a physical card that you simply tap to board

What it covers: unlimited bus, trolley, and Coaster rides in fall, winter, and spring quarters.

Download the official app(PRONTO, in UCSD's case).
Create a student account and enter your enrollment details.
Select the student program (often listed as a "$0" item).
Activate and your phone becomes the pass.
No smartphone? Pick up a physical card at the campus transportation office.

Always carry your student ID for fare inspections.
If you lose the card: many schools will deactivate it and issue a replacement cheaply.
Check ahead: service is often reduced on holidays and during breaks.
Parking: some campuses offer discounted parking too (worth asking about).
